Fields covered by solar cells will become an increasingly common sight even in Sweden. Today, there are only about ten solar parks with an effect over one megawatt, but now much larger is going on. At the end of April, HSB Södermanland will begin construction of the country's largest solar park near E20 at Strängnäs. It will have 50,000 solar panels and will be almost four times the size of today's largest with an installed capacity of 20 MW.

"The price of solar systems has fallen to a level where it is clearly profitable to build on a large scale," says Johan Skördare, CEO of the projector Energy Engagement.

Electricity for tenants

Large plants can also receive grants from the state, but there is a ceiling of 1.2 million per project. It is a small part of the park in Strängnäs, which costs about 100 million. The electricity will reach 7,500 apartments. In addition to illuminating HSB's own properties, tenants and tenant-owner associations shall be offered solel.

- It's definitely a good deal, but that's not the main purpose. HSB will hand over the park to the members and we will not make any money in between. We will create member benefits, says Jon Leo Rikhardsson, CEO of HSB Södermanland

Contributes to the goal

It is still the large number of small plants that account for the largest proportion of solar production. But large parks will provide a noticeable addition to the Swedish Energy Agency's forecast of 5-15 per cent of the country's electricity supply.

- We don't see anything right now that indicates that this trend is being developed quickly, says Sara Grettve, solar expert at the Swedish Energy Agency.
