Due to the fact that the price of solar cells has dropped sharply and thanks to government contributions, solar cells have risen sharply in Sweden over the last seven to eight years. But then a couple of years it really starts to appear. Last year, solar energy increased by almost 70%, according to the Swedish Energy Agency's estimate. The final figures will come on the last of March.

"We have no information that would indicate that the actual figures for 2019 will differ much," said Jeffrey Berard, investigator.

Unclear climate gain

But the question of whether solar cells are good for the climate is difficult to answer. Ordinary electricity in Sweden is almost completely carbon dioxide-free, so emissions do not reduce procurement of solar cells. But there may be other benefits. On the one hand, solar cells can help save on hydropower during the summer and electricity can also be exported on hot summer days when the need is great in neighboring countries with dirty electricity. In part, solar can contribute to future electricity supply.

- Solel is the greenest form of electricity that can be produced. And if we are to have a renewable conversion and an increased use of electricity from 140 to 190 or 200 terawatt hours a year, new green energy must be added. Then solar is a very good alternative, says Johan Skördare, CEO of the projector Energy Engagement.
