Many are surprised to hear that a 50-year-old woman in England was playing the violin under brain surgery.

Foreign media including Daily Mail, UK, introduced a video taken in the operating room of King's College London in London on Wednesday.

Looking at the video, a female patient lying on the operating table closes her eyes and starts playing the violin. Medical staff gather at the bedside of the patient and talk with a thoughtful look.

After a while, the scalpel moves from head to head, but the violin tune continues to ring in the operating room. The patient in the video is a 53-year-old Dagmar Turner who has been playing the violin for over 40 years and has also been an orchestra member. Turner suffered a seizure during the performance in 2013 and was diagnosed with malignant glioma at the hospital.

Since last year, Turner's brain tumors have deteriorated to the point that they need to be removed. But I couldn't proceed with the surgery because I was worried that brain surgery would reduce my ability to play the violin that I had been playing since I was 10 years old.

It was the neurosurgery professor Kiyomar Ashkan who understood Turner's heart. Ashkan, who was also a pianist, created a special surgery plan for a patient with a passion for music.

As a result, during the surgery on the 31st of last month, Mr. Turner started playing the violin with a skull incision. The staff carefully checked the affected area for two hours of performance and removed the tumor from the area where it was involved. The surgery ended successfully in six hours.

In an interview with the media, Ashkan said, "We do about 400 tumor removals every year at our hospital, but this is the first time a patient plays an instrument during the surgery." "I knew how important the violin was to Mr. Turner," he said. "It was most important to preserve the delicate functions of the brain so that performance is maintained even after surgery."

Turner, who was discharged from hospital three days later, is reported to be recovering at home.
