February 18, 2020 A team of New Zealand scientists from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) managed to capture a giant 4-meter-long squid that weighs 109 kilos.

It took 6 people to pull the squid aboard the Tangaroa scientific research vessel. The researchers were studying valuable fish of protected species and by pure chance they came across the squid.

It was an unexpected success since giant squid live in the abysses and it is practically impossible to fish them. Few giant squids, which had come into the hands of the researchers, were already dead, thrown to the banks by the tides. Therefore very little is known about their lives and habits.
