Cameroon massacre: UN calls for independent and impartial investigation

The UN calls for an independent, impartial and complete investigation after the deaths of several civilians on February 14 in the English-speaking northwest of Cameroon, during clashes between rebels and the police.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights denounces a new " shocking episode " of the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon. According to organization officials on the ground, 23 civilians were killed during the fighting on February 14 , including 15 children and two pregnant women.

In the United Nations press release, witnesses indicate that on that day, around forty armed men attacked a village in the north-west of the country, shooting civilians and burning houses. An investigation has already been opened, entrusted to the gendarmerie and military security. The UN is urging the authorities today to ensure that " those responsible are accountable ".

On February 17, the army spokesperson spoke for the first time on the subject and gave a completely different version of the drama. According to Cyrille Atonfack Guemo, the police were attacked by rebels during an operation. The firefight sparked a fire that claimed the lives of a woman and four children. The spokesman disputed the much heavier human toll, today relayed by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
