At 100, the oldest elected representative in France has decided not to stand for municipal elections in 2020. Louis Dauny, municipal councilor for Grands-Chézeaux (Haute-Vienne) "will step down after 74 years and 11 months in the service of the commune ”, confirmed his son this weekend.

Louis Dauny has been centenary since October 20. "It's our compass," says deputy mayor André Hérault. Elected for the first time in April 1945, Louis Dauny has served 13 successive terms. The same year, he married, had a child and took over the family wool spinning mill which, in 1989, was the last in the department to close.

An "example of dedication"

"In life, you have to know how to be reasonable in everything," said the elected official. “For me, as for the voters, it would not be reasonable to stand for re-election. Make way for young people! "But for his colleagues," it's a big loss, "says the secretary of the town hall. “He knows the history of the town and its inhabitants by heart. Physically, he is moving a little slower than before. But in the head, it goes quickly. "

Louis Dauny went regularly to the inhabitant "to listen to the citizens", because "it is often from there that good ideas start," he says. In December 2019, he was still distributing the parcels in Ehpad to the "old", younger than him. It is "an example of dedication always listening to the population," according to city councilor Sylvie Bennab. “It was his great strength. "

Assistant André Hérault says he was won over by "his vision of the future". "Where young people were sometimes a little warm, he was always ready to get carried away with new projects," he explains. Arrival of drinking water in the village, inauguration of a municipal stadium, installation of a garage which today employs 25 people: Louis Dauny left his mark on Grands-Chézeaux with his faith in these projects.
