• Europe. The tourism of coffee shops in Holland is nearing its end

Femke Halsema , mayor of Amsterdam , wants to fight against the massification of tourists in the center of the city and for this she studies banning the sale of Canabis to foreigners in Coffee Shops .

The City Council has published the results of a report that analyzes the relationship between tourism and drug use in the locality.

After surveying 1,161 foreign tourists between 18 and 35 years old , the conclusions were that two thirds stated that the purchase and consumption of cannabis legally was one of the reasons to visit Amsterdam as a destination.

According to local media, young people are the main cause of discomfort in the Dutch city, which receives 17.4 million tourists every year. That is why Halsema plans to ban tourists from buying cannabis as a solution to the center's massification.

Under Dutch law, since 2012 no tourist can use cannabis in the Coffe Shops in the country. However, in cities such as Amsterdam or Rotterdam, this rule does not apply when the identity document is not requested from customers.

Prohibition of guided tours

Another of the measures announced by the Amsterdam City Council has been the prohibition of guided visits to the Wallen red light district from April 1.

The session has also restricted tours to 15 people. Nor can they stop at crowded places such as entrances to shops and restaurants or bridges.
