In Latvia, a civil engineer has been found guilty of a 2013 collapse of a supermarket roof. 54 people died in the collapse of the roof of the Maxima supermarket in Riga, the capital of the country. This is the most devastating peace event in Latvian history.
According to AFP news agency, the 38-year-old engineer was sentenced to six years in prison and paid $ 5.7 million in compensation to the victims' families. The judge is said to have found the designer guilty of "gross negligence in the structural calculations, comparable to murder."
Eight other people were also suspected and released. Among those released were architects, construction project managers, a security expert at the Maxima trade and former building control officials from the City of Riga.
According to AFP, the judge also ordered a new investigation into manufacturers of roofing components for the store.
