Bäckröding is an American fish species that was planted in Swedish waters during the 20th century. The species has established itself in many places and is found in about 300 locations in the country.

The brook trout is a threat to native species such as trout and even river pearl mussel. It threatens to out-compete natural trout stocks, which in turn are necessary for the river pearl mussel's ability to spread.

Aggressive behavior

- The brook trout grows fast and has aggressive behavior and also becomes sexually mature faster than our usual trout, so it has a big advantage in less water, says Fredrik Schaerström at the county administrative board in Västernorrland.

In order to protect indigenous species, SLU will implement a project to try to eradicate a number of brook trout populations in Västernorrlands, Jämtlands and Västerbotten counties. In Västernorrland, the attempt will be made to fish out in Sulån northwest of Sundsvall where the brook trout will be decimated with so-called electric fishing.

Liked by the locals

Bo Sandström, who lives at Sulån, is positive about the project even though he usually fishes in the river and gets a lot of brook trout.

- I think it's good, I want the trout back, he says.
