In the middle region, which includes Västmanland, Gävleborg and Uppsala, 57 human trafficking cases came to the police's knowledge. In 2016 there were two. - The fact that demand for human bodies still exists and that they are willing to pay for it is a big part of the fact that human trafficking can still exist, says Anna Runesson and Carmen Jorro Martinez, regional co-ordinators against prostitution and human trafficking.

The regional coordinators are responsible, among other things, for the victims of trafficking in human beings who will be involved in an investigation are taken care of in a good way as well as being given protected housing and a safe environment.

- Our work will continue even when the trial is over. We continue to support the individual so that they do not fall into the traffickers' hands again, ”says Anna Runesson.

In 2019, 15 were reported for sexual service purchases in Västmanland. There were 33 in the whole region.

- It's pretty low if you look at what open prostitution looks like. Had we been able to work even more operationally, we would have been able to get even more cases, more women identified and sex buyers arrested, says Anna Runesson.
