Bike paths have recently been built on the "green network" - F. Binacchi / ANP / 20 Minutes

  • The municipal elections are held on March 15 and 22, 2020. Each Monday, 20 Minutes will address a theme of the campaign. Today, mobility and more particularly the bicycle.
  • Nice lags behind in terms of infrastructure, in particular according to the list of cycling cities.
  • Candidates for municipal elections deliver their proposals to do better.

There is still a lot to do. According to the 2019 list of cycling cities, unveiled a few days ago, Nice occupies the back of the peloton among the municipalities of more than 200,000 inhabitants, just before Marseille, in last position.

The survey of the French Federation of bicycle users (FUB) notes a slight improvement but judges the "bicycle climate" as being "unfavorable" in the city which will host the start of the Tour de France 2020.

Reach 150 km of slopes for Estrosi and up to 340 km for ViVA!

"The number of kilometers of cycle paths doubled and the paths in own site increased by 60% since 2008", according to the outgoing mayor Christian Estrosi, are not enough for the amateurs of these two-wheelers.

The candidate therefore promises to reach the 150 km of lanes reserved for bicycles, "or an additional 75 km". It also intends to “multiply the parking offer”, install “electric charging stations every 10 km” and create “a bicycle house”.

It is far from the account according to the ViVA list! which proposes “the construction of a real 340 km cycle network” and “an overall reduction in traffic and speed of cars”.

Reserved lanes for some, no hunting for motorists for others

Jean-Marc Governatori (ecological Nice) also calls for "an ambitious cycling plan". "Promiscuity and speed being accident-prone", he wants to create "a traffic lane exclusively reserved for cyclists created on major routes" between Gambetta and Nice north, Carabacel, Paillon and Bon Voyage and on Masséna and the Port.

Not enough to agree with Philippe Vardon. The candidate of the National Gathering (RN) is clear: "If we have to make the city more welcoming for bikes, it should not be done in a logic of hunting motorists. "Many people have a legitimate need to use their cars, and the city should not be built against them," he said.

Christian Razeau (Animalist Party, MAHN) wants to encourage the use of bikes for employees by introducing "a bonus for linking their home to their work". He intends "to make cycle paths" but specifies that, to get there, "it is necessary to free parked cars".

Tackling the theft of two wheels "which is a municipal sport in Nice"

And if "Nice is one of the donkey caps when it comes to cycling", the fault has hitherto been "a cyclical development of opportunity, without consistency", judge Patrick Allemand. The socialist candidate intends, among other things, to create “double-protected protected cycle paths”, to set up “a true North-South network” and to extend the Blue Bicycles service (launched in 2009) “to the east of the metropolis” .

Benoît Kandel (CNIP, DLF) wants above all to tackle the theft of two wheels "which is a municipal sport in Nice", according to him. "To counter this sad state of affairs, I propose the creation of secure car parks that will need to be installed in the city center and near the SNCF and tram stations," he said.
