Lebanese media and a source in the state-owned Middle East Airlines said that the company changed its decision to accept payment only in dollars, after a violent reaction on Sunday.

This decision was taken at a time when Lebanon is facing a liquidity crisis in foreign exchange, which has resulted in the Lebanese pound losing more than a third of its value against the dollar.

News of this decision was published late on Saturday, which led to dozens heading to the Middle East Airlines ticket office at Beirut airport in an attempt to purchase tickets in Lebanese pounds before the decision came into effect on Monday.

Gibran Bassil, leader of the Free Patriotic Movement and former foreign minister, had previously described this decision as illegal.

Parliament member Fouad Makhzoumi wrote in a tweet on Twitter that the decision "will put the Lebanese in house arrest, and it should be canceled."

Lebanese President Michel Aoun said that airline tickets should be priced in Lebanese pounds in accordance with the law.

Lebanon is suffering from an unprecedented financial crisis that surfaced late last year, as financial flows to the country slowed and protests erupted against the ruling elite in the country with "the cause of corruption and bad governance," according to the protesters.
