Agnès Buzyn replaces Benjamin Griveaux and takes the head of the Parisian municipal campaign - engaged in the campaign

  • After three days of political slump, the “Griveaux affair” finally found a solution this Sunday with the appointment of Agnes Buzyn.
  • The validation of this candidacy - internally and by the national investiture commission - seems to be a formality given the urgency for the presidential majority to have a candidate, one month before the first round.
  • The Minister of Health had never hidden her will to get involved politically in Paris.

"I'm going, I want to. I'm going to win. "After three days of political slump, the" Griveaux affair "finally found a solution this Sunday. The Minister of Health, Agnès Buzyn, announced at the end of the afternoon that she was standing as a candidate to take the reins of the campaign for the town hall of Paris. The validation of this candidacy - internally and by the national investiture commission - seems to be a formality given the urgency for the presidential majority to have a candidate, one month before the first round. Friday, after the disclosure of an intimate video, Benjamin Griveaux indeed announced his withdrawal.

Half a surprise

As of the announcement of the withdrawal of the former government spokesperson, the name of Agnès Buzyn circulated as a potential replacement. The Minister of Health has never hidden her desire to get involved politically in Paris. "I always said that I wanted to be a candidate in Paris and that I wanted to get involved for my city," she said again last week on BFM. In recent days, however, the minister seemed more hesitant. While her name was mentioned to be at the top of the list in the 6th arrondissement where she resides, then in the very strategic 15th arrondissement, she never stopped pushing the decision. If it put forward a particularly busy agenda, some have also seen an effect of bad polls of the Paris campaign.

Many pending files

Pension reform, hospital crisis, coronavirus ... In recent weeks, the Minister of Health has indeed been on all fronts. Again on Saturday, she was giving a press conference after the first coronavirus-related death in France. While several ministers involved in the campaign - including Edouard Philippe - decided to keep their portfolios, Agnès Buzyn made the decision to resign from his post as soon as he was inaugurated. "The increase in intense activity, particularly related to the coronavirus crisis, requires intense involvement", she justified, stating however that "the continuity of the action of the ministry will be able to count on the solidity and the implication total of operational teams ”. Olivier Véran, LREM deputy for Isère and a neurologist, is expected to replace her.

A first policy for the Minister

If her inauguration is a relief for party officials, the Minister of Health, who has never held any elective office or even been on a list, will have little time to familiarize herself with the workings of a countryside. Professor of medicine, specializing in hematology, tumor immunology and transplantation, Agnès Buzyn's career only took a political turn in 2017, when she was appointed by Emmanuel Macron. She embodies the "civil society" that the new President has constantly promoted throughout his campaign. She was then director of the High Authority for Health (HAS) since March 2016 after having been president of the National Cancer Institute for a long time.
