Alexandre and Thomas, two of the three - B. Colin / 20 Minutes

We may be green, the idea of having to wash baby diapers every night is not really the foot. Toulouse residents have decided to take care of it for parents committed to protecting the planet by setting up a cleaning service, rental and delivery of washable diapers called "uncle washers".

An innovative solution which will see the light of day in September but which is already in the running for the call for projects "My Solution for the Climate" of the Occitania region.

This idea germinated in the minds of three geologists, not really specialists in the early childhood sector. Except when one of them, Sylvain, became a father and asked himself the question of washable diapers. If he could see the ecological interest they had, he also saw the brakes that their management could create in some parents.

The three friends decided to solve this problem for them by offering this service. “We realized that this was done in other countries or in other places in France. So we decided to go into collective structures, such as crèches or drop-in centers, because, for the moment, it is simpler in terms of volume and this makes it possible to raise awareness among families, ”explains Alexandre, one members of the association "Les tontons laveurs".

One thousand kilos less waste

Between October and December, they tested their concept with two nurseries in the Pink City. Every day, they delivered clean diapers, made on the outskirts of Toulouse, and left with those used. “The soiled layers are put in a ball, we separate the two parts, the absorbent one in microfiber and the waterproof one. We remove the surplus, then they go to a professional laundry, ”continues Alexandre.

After several weeks of testing, with the parents' agreement, "the feedback is quite good". The question of respect for the environment is a valid argument. “A child consumes 4,000 to 5,000 disposable diapers until he is clean, or 1,000 kg, with washable diapers, that's about twenty. In production, disposables require 23,400 liters of water, with washes it is 13,800 ”, says Thomas, another of the“ uncle washers ”.

Only one point remains to be settled: that of the cost, slightly higher when using this service. But to settle it, the people of Toulouse decided to invest in a professional washing machine. And to achieve this, they hope they will arouse the enthusiasm among voters of the call for projects in the region "my solution for the climate", online until March 2.
