Parenting initiatives in the villages of Nästansjö and Malgovik outside Vilhelmina started just a few weeks ago. The parents submitted an application last week to start a free school.

"There is no shortage of commitment," says Vanja Marthin, one of the parents behind the application to the School Inspectorate to start a free school.

School savings cause

The background to the investment is Vilhelmina Municipality's crisis economy. Last week, the message came that the municipality was forced to borrow SEK 82 million at running costs and this week the municipal council made the decision, among other things, to close down the village schools in Nästansjö and Malgovik to save money.

The association that is now formed is called "Nästanvik". There is already quite a large collaboration between the two schools.

- It is safe and there is good working peace in the classrooms, says Anna Enebjörk, mother of Gustav who attends Malgovik school. He enjoys his school, likes that it is quiet in the class that is small and that he can play hockey on the breaks.

- Is it that we have to go in Vilhelmina then it is so, but I enjoy here and hope to stay here in Malgovik, he says.

Positive to the initiative

Within a few weeks, the municipality will comment on the initiative to the School Inspectorate. The municipality can comment but has no control.
