It was after discovering the counterfeit banknotes that a cash haulage company had collected daily cash registers from six different companies in Södertälje and Nykvarn. The police do not know the value of the banknotes but state that this time it was about 500 notes in all cases.
So far this year, the police have received 63 notifications of fake banknotes in Stockholm County - seven of them in Södertälje. The corresponding figures for 2019 are 334 in the county and 12 in Södertälje.
"It is serious if you cannot rely on the payment system as a whole - and, of course, seriously for those who receive the counterfeit banknotes," says Johan Siverland, an inspector at the Södertalje Police who urges people who have counterfeit banknotes to bring them to the police.
