February 12, 2020 The UN Security Council has approved, for the first time since the rekindling of the conflict in Libya in April, a resolution calling for a "lasting ceasefire" to replace the fragile truce in force in that country since January.

The text, drafted by the United Kingdom, was approved with 14 votes out of 15, with Russia abstaining. It had been the subject of intense discussions for more than three weeks, demonstrating the persistent divisions of the international community on the Libyan question, despite the unity that manifested in Berlin on January 19.
