Insufficient masks, re-used suits… For lack of adequate protection, the hospital staff of Wuhan, the Chinese city at the epicenter of the epidemic, works at the mercy of contamination by the coronavirus. "To save full suits, colleagues change them only once every four, six, even eight hours," said a doctor at AFP.
She works for a large hospital responsible for treating patients severely affected by pneumonia, in the city which has been in de facto quarantine since January 23. "During all this time, colleagues cannot eat, drink or go to the toilet," she said, preferring to remain anonymous for fear of possible reprisals. Some wear diapers for adults during their long hours of care, recognized the National Health Commission.

The death toll rose further to 1,113, according to Chinese health officials. But the number of new deaths on Wednesday (97) is the first daily decline since February 2. Beijing had reported 108 dead the day before.
A total of 44,653 infected people have now been identified in mainland China. An encouraging sign here too: the number of new daily cases reported on Wednesday (2,015) decreased significantly compared to Tuesday (2,478) and Monday (3,062), according to the National Health Commission. Zhong Nanshan, a leading Chinese scientist and veteran of the fight against the SARS virus in the country (2002-2003), estimated that the epidemic should peak "by mid- or late February ".
