Of a total of 54 reported workplace accidents that resulted in sick leave among train and bus hosts in Jönköping County during the years 2014-2018, 10 were caused by threats and violence. And the total number of incidents was significantly more, according to figures from the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

As staff on board trains and buses are above the average in the country in terms of reported workplace accidents that led to sick leave due to threats and violence, the Swedish Work Environment Authority is now making a special effort.

Messy environment

- Bus drivers and staff working on board trains are exposed to situations that are particularly risky. They must work in all areas at all times, even messy weekend nights, and check tickets. Therefore, it is important that employers minimize the risks, says Eva Karsten, occupational health and safety inspector and project manager for the work at the Swedish Work Environment Authority.

Checks should be made on how employers prevent threats and violence. For example, it may be about hiring security guards on particularly vulnerable lines. If work environment deficiencies are detected, the employer will be required to rectify these deficiencies.
