The town hall delivers its statement. A total of 3,552 homeless people were counted in Paris at the end of January during the “Night of Solidarity” organized to count the homeless in the capital, according to the results revealed this Tuesday by the town hall.

Last year, 3,641 people were identified in one night, up sharply from the 3,035 homeless people counted in 2018 during the first edition of the operation.

"There is stability"

"There is stability compared to last year and it could have been even less", explained to AFP Dominique Versini, assistant to the Solidarity of the town hall, evoking the evacuation of a camp of migrants carries d'Aubervilliers two days after the count, which took place on January 30.

Of the 3,552 homeless people identified, 2,629 were homeless on the streets, especially in the 19th arrondissement where their number increased sharply (664 against 466 in 2019). Their presence declined in the 18th (322 against 507) and the 10th (274 against 359).

According to figures from the town hall, 558 homeless people (compared to 751 in 2019) have also been identified in stations, metros, hospital emergencies, parking lots or low-cost buildings and 365 others have been counted in woods, gardens and edges. of the peripheral, against 639 in 2019.

"These figures are explained by the displacement of migrant camps," says Vanessa Benoit, deputy director of the Social Action Center of the city of Paris, who observes a slight increase in the central districts of the city.

"The fairly mild weather allowed the homeless to race in the busiest districts, instead of going to the subways or other to protect themselves from the cold," she said.

“Places of reception specifically for women”

As in previous years, 12% of those interviewed were women. "This shows that we must continue to open reception centers specifically for women, it is a new phenomenon that we must learn to manage," said Dominique Versini.

A shelter which is to accommodate 140 isolated women and leaving maternity will open "in the coming weeks" in the 2nd arrondissement, according to the elected official. A qualitative analysis of this census must be made public at the end of March.
