Smoking is one of the causes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the fourth most common cause of death around the world, and the number of its victims has outnumbered those affected by the coronavirus, SARS and plague. What happens to the body when it is left?
Whatever the smoking period, as soon as it is quit and tobacco products, there will be a noticeable improvement in the human body, says Mohamed Bayram, chest physician at Medipol Mega Hospital.
Here we present what happens to the body during the hours and days after quitting smoking, according to Perm:
1- Once a person stops smoking, his body begins to recover. After only one hour, the heart rate will drop and return to its normal level.
2- After 12 hours after stopping smoking, the body can clean itself and get rid of the carbon monoxide that cigarettes contain, and it may be fatal if exposed to high doses because it prevents blood from absorbing oxygen.
3- After 24 hours, the risk of a heart attack decreases and the heart works well. Smoking reduces the HDL that the heart needs, which means an increased risk of heart attack.
At the same time, the oxygen level in the blood increases, which facilitates physical activity, and helps maintain healthy heart habits.
4- After 48 hours of quitting smoking, a person notices a higher ability to smell and taste because smoking destroys nerve endings such as those responsible for these two senses.
5- After three days, the body's nicotine will drop to its lowest levels, which may cause most smokers with mood swings, discomfort and a severe headache before the body gets used to the new levels of nicotine.
6- Within seven days, the cells responsible for purifying the air from harmful bodies during breathing, located on the inner surface of the nose and the bronchi, will return to wellness and work well.
7 - With a full month after the tobacco cessation, the lung function begins to recover, and when it regains its functional cycle, the smoking cessator can notice a cough shortness and shortness of breath, and while the athletic abilities improve, quitters can perform activities that depend on the heart muscle greatly such as jumping and running .
For her part, Aeget Yeget, a doctor at Istanbul Pendik Medipol University Hospital, advised smokers to stop smoking immediately.
I listed - in this regard - the health risks of smoking, pointing out that tobacco use is one of the causes of COPD, the fourth most common cause of death around the world.
It showed that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can be controlled, but it cannot be fully recovered, and quitting smoking stops its development.
On the benefits of quitting tobacco, Yegit said, "When a person quits smoking, the blood circulation in the human body improves, and the oxygen-rich blood goes to the cells, which improves the functions of the organs."
Yeghit also confirmed that quitting smoking improves sexual health, because "smoking causes arteriosclerosis or thickening of its walls, and thus erectile dysfunction, but that once quit it decreases the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and there is a marked improvement in sexual performance."
For his part, Muhammad Amin Aq Guiyunlu, a cardiologist at Medipol Mega Hospital, referred to what the World Health Organization said that "smoking is an epidemic that causes the greatest harm to humanity."
The doctor adopts this opinion for two reasons: first, he considers tobacco use a disease, and the second is that the Health Organization confirms that the number of people affected by smoking exceeded those who were affected by the Coronavirus and SARS or even the largest plague that swept the entire medieval world.
"After quitting smoking, the body needs ten years to repair the damage caused by smoking," Guyunlu said.
"If you want to stop smoking, quit immediately, as your body may not have enough time to recover," he added.
Turkey celebrates the National No Tobacco Day on February 9 every year to raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco use, which is a serious cancer-causing factor, which kills 8 million people worldwide every year.
