Wiesbaden (dpa) - Germany remains a preferred travel destination for tourists from home and abroad. Last year, 495.6 million overnight stays counted more than ever before. It was the tenth record of overnight stays in a row, as the Federal Statistical Office reported in Wiesbaden on Monday.
The increase compared to 2018 was 3.7 percent, with the number of overnight stays by domestic guests (+3.9 percent) increasing slightly more than that of foreigners (+2.5 percent). Since 2009, the number of overnight stays has increased by more than a third. During this period, the number of foreigners (+64 percent) increased significantly more than that of domestic guests (+29.3 percent).
The industry has long benefited from the fact that trips to Germany are trendy. There are also business travelers and trade fair guests. With the exception of the crisis year 2009, the number of overnight stays has been increasing since 2003. The Wiesbaden statisticians take account of accommodation establishments with at least ten beds in their calculations.
The NGG union took the new high as an opportunity to warn against the extension of working hours. «The approximately 1.7 million employees in the industry have long been working at the limit. Anyone who calls for longer working hours is jeopardizing the health of those who have achieved the ten-year boom, »explained NGG chairman Guido Zeitler in Berlin. Demands by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) “completely ignored reality” and frightened urgently needed specialists.
