South Korean director Bong Joon Ho has won an Oscar for Best Director for his film Parasite.

In his speech, Bong Joon Ho thanked film director Martin Scorses and director Quentin Tarantino.

The prize was the biggest surprise of the evening, as British director Sam Mendes was widely credited with winning the best director award in advance of the fight thanks to the War Fighters - 1917 movie.

Parasite was also nominated for Best International Film and Awarded for Best Original Screenplay. Bong Joon Ho went on to win the awards on the Oscar stage as well.

Also nominated for the Best Director Oscar were Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Todd Phillips (Joker), Sam Mendes (Battle Missions - 1917) and Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood).

As in previous years, the Oscar Gala is hosted by the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The Oscar Gala will be held for the 92nd time this year.

The Oscar is the world's most famous film award. The Academy Awards decide on the Academy Awards.
