10 February 2020About another 60 people, including passengers and staff on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Yokohama (near Tokyo), tested positive for the new coronavirus of Chinese origin, the Japanese media said today. This additional number brings the total number of infected individuals on the cruise ship to around 130, which is now in quarantine. The sumptuous ship arrived a week ago at the port of Yokohama, south-west of Tokyo, carrying around 3,700 passengers and crew members.

Before the 60 new cases were known, about 100 of the passengers and crew had already been hospitalized, while the remaining 3,600, mostly elderly of various nationalities, are still in quarantine on board. The quarantine period could last until February 19. The tests were initially limited to people who showed symptoms or came into contact with a passenger who had previously landed in Hong Kong and was found to be the carrier of the virus. They were later extended to vulnerable people on board, including people who had been in contact with new cases of infection. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on Japan to take all necessary measures to accompany Diamond Princess passengers confined on board, including psychological support measures.

Meanwhile, with 97 new deaths, the toll of the coronavirus epidemic in China has risen to 908 deaths. The Chinese National Health Commission announced this in its daily bulletin, stating that there are 3,062 new confirmed cases and 4,008 suspects. According to the Chinese authorities, 296 people are in serious condition while 632 have been discharged from hospitals. There are 40,171 cases confirmed in China since the outbreak.
