February 09, 2020All ready in Los Angeles, California, for the 92nd edition of the Oscars, which like every year will be held at the Dolby Theater, starting at 5:00 pm local time (2:00 am in Italy).

Waiting for the names of the winners to be known, the predictions are fairly unanimous. At the end of an exceptional year for the quality and variety of the international film offering, '1917' and 'Parasite' are the favorites to win the most prestigious award, the one for best film: the director's work will also play for bookmakers English Sam Mendes, set during the First World War, and that of the Korean Bong Joon-ho, rather than Quentin Tarantino's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' and 'Joker', directed by Todd Phillips and based on the well-known comic character .

On paper, 'Joker', which has eleven nominations, takes the lead on '1917', 'The Irishman' and 'Once upon a time ... in Hollywood', all with ten nominations each. But the awards season that precedes the most glamorous evening of the year has already dictated the line. Mendes' film has established itself for the originality and narrative power of the directing technique: it has been the absolute dominator since its triumph at the Golden Globes (best dramatic film) and is the great favorite for the most coveted statuette, that of best movie. It also imposed itself on the Bafta and the Producers Guild Awards (Pga), which is the best springboard for the category of the Oscars (in the last ten years, the winner of the Pga for the best film then ended up taking eight times the statuette most coveted at the Hollywood Academy).

Only the unexpected and sensational phenomenon of 'Parasite', which has six nominations in total, seems capable of tearing that Oscar from '1917'. 'Parasite', which has already written the story by winning the Best Cast Award at the Actors Guild Awards (Sag), could therefore become the first film in a language other than English to be crowned with the most important Oscar recognition.

Along with '1917' and 'Parasite' they also have nominations for best film 'Once upon a time ... in Hollywood', 'The Irishman', 'Le Mans' 66 ',' Jojo Rabbit ',' Joker ',' Little women 'and' Story of a wedding '. Another Oscar that could go to '1917' is the one for the best director, Sam Mendes, candidate together with Martin Scorsese ('The Irishman'), Quentin Tarantino ('Once upon a time ... in Hollywood'), Todd Phillips ('Joker') and Bong Joon-ho ('Parasite'). Mendes' phenomenal camera technique has already earned him the Golden Globe, Bafta and Directors Guild Award (Dga) for best director. In the last decade, all those who received the most coveted award at the Dga awards have repeated themselves with the best direction at the Oscar except in 2013.

There are two super-favorites for the statuette of best actor and best leading actress: Joaquin Phoenix for 'Joker' and Renée Zellweger for 'Judy', a film directed by Rupert Goold and dedicated to the last months of the life of the singer, Judy Garland. Meanwhile, in the group of supporting actors, Brad Pitt, interpreter in 'Once upon a time ... in Hollywood', and Laura Dern for 'Story of a wedding' stand out. The Oscar for best foreign film is almost taken for granted at 'Parasite'.

For the best original screenplay, finally, the bookmakers indicate as favorites to the Oscar especially 'Parasite' (written by Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won), followed by 'Once upon a time ... in Hollywood' (Quentin Tarantino). 'Story of a wedding' (Noah Baumbach) is the third in the order, while the chances of success of '1917' (Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns) and the yellow 'Dinner with a crime - Knives Out' are considered low written and directed by Rian Johnson). 'Little women' (Greta Gerwig) is instead the favorite for the best non-original screenplay. Finally, among the animated films are 'Klaus - The secrets of Christmas' and 'Toy Story 4' in front of 'Missing Link'. Get off with less chance 'Where's my body?' and 'The hidden world'.
