Menden (dpa) - Sad certainty: The girl from Menden in the Sauerland (North Rhine-Westphalia), who has been missing for about a week, has been found dead.

The ten-year-old was discovered in a weir on the Ruhr on Sunday morning, the police said. How and why she died was initially unclear.

The girl had run out of the apartment on February 1st in an unobserved moment - probably barefoot and in pink pajamas. It was feared that the ten-year-old might have fallen into the Hönne River, which flows right next to the family home. A day-long, large-scale search with many volunteers and by helicopter was unsuccessful.
