This week, the Swedish Transport Agency launched a campaign aimed at boat owners called A cleaner wake . The campaign focuses on three areas to reduce the climate and environmental impact of recreational boats. It is about driving, choice of fuel and engines.

The Swedish Transport Agency wants boat owners to replace the old two-stroke engines as 30 percent of the fuel goes unburied straight into the water. It was a message that aroused a lot of reactions from SVT's viewers.

"Giant Seriously"

One issue that has been raised following the Swedish Transport Agency's request is the problem of theft of new boat engines. Last year, 2,270 boat engine thefts were reported in Sweden, according to preliminary statistics from the Crime Prevention Council, Brå.

- It's very serious. It affects ordinary people, says Peter Karlsson, Head of Operations for the Swedish Boat Union.

Requires action

The Swedish Boat Union represents about 170,000 individual boat club members. They have been pushing for the government to do more in the matter of boat engine thefts.

The government has previously commissioned the police, customs and coastguard to strengthen the fight against international crime networks that commit theft in Sweden. That assignment will be finalized by February 14 this year.
