The abuse of 18-year-old Matias Soto happened on January 29, and it took a few days before the surveillance photos of what happened came out. The video shows, among other things, how he gets kicked in the head and hit repeatedly with a baton.

Soto broke several ribs, but survived the abuse. Police brutality has received strong criticism in Chile, where human rights organizations have reacted strongly.

- This incident, along with thousands of other notifications that we have received regarding serious human rights violations, should not go unpunished. Truth must be forthcoming and justice must be shipped, says Rodrigo Bustos of the Chile Institute for Human Rights.

Police Chief: Will be punished

Police Chief Eduardo Witt has stated that the police in question will be punished, and that the incident will be investigated.

Much of the autumn in Chile was characterized by unrest and violent clashes between police and protesters. Many of the protesters openly expressed their dissatisfaction with what they perceive as injustice and poor functioning government institutions.

Last week, a police car drove on a supporter to the Colo Colo football team, after which the supporter passed away.
