From our correspondent in Caracas,

Once again, Venezuela is the subject of a power struggle between Russia and the United States. After meeting with Nicolas Maduro and several ministers, Sergei Lavrov condemned the American sanctions which he believes are the main factor in the economic crisis in Venezuela. " We reiterate our solidarity and respect for the people and the Venezuelan government in their fight against the illegitimate pressure from the United States and their support in this endeavor, " he said. We strongly condemn blackmail methods and sanctions which are contrary to the UN Charter because they represent interference in the affairs of sovereign countries. "

The Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs also participated in a meeting of the "national dialogue table", a process of negotiations between an opposition minority and the Venezuelan government: " We reiterate our total support for President Nicolas Maduro and the government Venezuelan in their efforts to promote national dialogue and to involve all sectors of society. "

The message is clear: Russia will not let go of Nicolas Maduro anytime soon. The war of attrition with the United States will therefore continue on the Venezuelan question.

Washington also took advantage of Sergei Lavrov's visit to announce new sanctions, this time against Conviasa, the public airline of Venezuela.
