Over the past ten years, the number of guest nights in Sweden has increased by an average of three percent. This shows new statistics from Tillväxtverket.

Last year was no exception and in total there were 67.8 million guest nights - an increase of four percent, compared to 2018.

Record during the summer period

In Östergötland, the total number of commercial nights was nearly two million in 2019. This is an increase of five percent.

During the summer period June, July and August the increase was even greater - nine percent. A contributing factor to the record number of attracted to Östergötland is believed to be the so-called "homeester trend", as many Swedes chose to stay at home in Sweden.

- Hopefully, the number of commercial overnight stays will continue to increase during 2020. One challenge for Östergötland's visit destination is to get visitors who only stay overnight during the day to stay at least one night. Another is to try to extend the relatively short summer season, says Hanna Nord, strategist at Visit Östergötland in a press release.
