The government's idea of sorting food waste was actually quite simple. From next year everyone would do it. But the reality turned out to be more complicated than that. Several small municipalities, including in the inland of Västerbotten and Norrbotten, protested.

The municipalities may decide for themselves

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has a mandate to decide for themselves whether municipalities can receive exemptions. There is now a proposal to rewrite the regulation, it is now out on a referral round.

- The proposal is written so that it is about assessing how much food waste it will be for a municipality. Then it is up to the municipality to decide if it is covered by the exemption, says Ingela Grudin at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

The relevant authorities, some municipalities and organizations such as Waste Sweden will respond to the referral no later than March.

The notification of an exemption should come in the summer and then the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has an assignment to follow up if the municipality has made the right choice.

In the clip above you hear Ingela Grudin explain why some municipalities can get an exemption and what households in those municipalities can do instead with their food waste.
