These are bus drivers who read paper while driving, talked on the phone, but also sent messages or surfed on social media.

Metter Ramquist, head of Västtrafik, writes to SVT News in an email to:

- The consequence can be that the driver is warned and in the most serious cases it can result in a dismissal.

Read paper at the wheel

Last summer, a bus driver in Gothenburg was filmed sitting and reading paper at the wheel. He was filmed for three minutes. Employer Gothenburg's tramways took a serious look at the incident. Dan Paulström was business area manager on Gothenburg's tramways, where the current driver is employed. When SVT News West played the movie for him, he emphasized that the driver's actions were not okay.

- Most of our drivers know about and perform their responsible role to the point. If there is any deviation like this, then we would like to know so that we can take it, because this we think is completely crazy, said Dan Paulström.

Gothenburg's tramways and Västtrafik investigated the incident from last summer internally, but failed to identify the driver and no reprimand or termination was made.

- We got stuck. We do not recognize him, said Peter Löfgren, traffic manager on Gothenburg's tramways, at the incident this summer.

SVT asked if county transport companies and regions asked for a penalty at some time last year for a bus driver using a mobile phone while driving.

Only five out of a total of 21 regions and county transport companies had done so. West traffic has not.

Not entered white

Some state that they have not even written the opportunity to request a penalty in the agreements with the bus companies.

The Jönköping County Region has that opportunity and they requested a penalty 28 times last year for bus drivers to use a mobile phone when driving.

"It has a little calming effect, but the general debate that is up now is having more effect," says Charles Tholin, business developer at Jönköping County Traffic.

Prohibition according to policy

According to Västtrafik's policy, drivers are not allowed to use mobile phones during travel and customer meetings. In exceptional cases, mobile phones can be used in the service for example alarms. Hands-free equipment should be used on these occasions. The use must be done in a way that does not affect the safety and security of travelers and staff.
