It was on Thursday morning that it was discovered that a large drinking water pipe in central Malmö had broken. Djäknegatan and Studentgatan at Amiralsbron were closed and traffic was diverted. This affects a wide range of bus lines, both city and regional buses passing here. Studentgatan and Djäknegatan stops cannot be used. Skånetrafiken refers to other stops and urges its travelers to keep track of the travel planner.
The cause is unclearWhat caused the big leak is unclear.
- We must find out then. Right now we are in an acute phase where it is about preparing the management, says Maria Nordblad Stålgard, communicator at VA Syd.
- When that is done, we can find out what happened. All we know is that there is no accident, no one dug by the management.
The water has flowed down the canal, which goes right next door. It brings with it large amounts of gravel, so the channel water has become really cloudy. It is not dangerous and the turbidity will eventually disappear.
Cloudy channel waterThe water pipe goes deep into the ground and as this is a very busy street, the asphalt pavement is thick. Therefore, it has taken time for VA Syd to dig down to the leak. And no one knows when the traffic can be dropped again.
- We believe and hope that our part of the work, ie to repair the leak, will be ready for tonight, says Maria Nordblad Stålgard.
- But then you have to check that it is safe to drive before you can drop the traffic. And when it can be done I don't know.
May have undermined the streetsThe leak is large and there is a lot of water that has run out. It may have undermined the roadways and it must be carefully checked before the fences are removed. When that can happen is unclear.
- A guess right now is that it will be closed until tomorrow Friday, says Maria Nordblad Stålgard.
Malmö City's street office will investigate the security during the day.
