It is not the coronavirus that will prevent these young lovebirds from celebrating the happiest day of their lives. Joseph Yew and Kang Tin, based in Singapore, left on January 24 to celebrate Chinese New Year in the province the groom is from, in Hunan, reports the BBC. It is a province bordering on that of origin of the virus. According to Joseph, there was still no concern about the virus in the region, which is rather rural.

The couple, who returned on January 30, were expected to marry three days later in a hotel in Singapore. But the coronavirus epidemic has passed through there and the fear of falling ill has lodged in everyone's mind. To the point that for a large number of guests, it was no longer possible to attend the wedding, for fear that the bride and groom would have caught the virus and contaminate them.

No choice but to maintain the marriage

It is indeed possible to be contagious for up to ten days without the symptoms of the coronavirus being visible. Singapore is the third country most affected by the virus, with 28 cases reported to date.

“Some of them did not want to come. We wanted to postpone the wedding but [the management] of the hotel was against it. They indicated that everything was prepared and that it was not negotiable. So we said to ourselves that we had no choice but to maintain the marriage, ”explains Joseph Yew.

Slight disappointment

This is how their atypical idea comes to them not to attend their own wedding so as not to discourage the most fearful guests. “We then announced to the guests that we were going to make a video conference… Some were shocked. "

The couple, who had already married in China, organized a second ceremony in Singapore for the guests who were then unable to travel. "I think if we had been there, the atmosphere would have been different, people would have been suspicious," added the groom.

The evening of D-Day, it is therefore by videoconference that the newlyweds were in contact with their guests, of whom 110 out of 190 attended the event. Joseph Yew and Kang Tin were installed in a room a few floors higher, in the same hotel as where the ceremony was taking place. They slashed champagne, toasted and gave a live speech for their guests.

“We thanked them for coming and told them to enjoy dinner. We were not sad but a little disappointed. I think there was no other option so no regrets! »Assures the groom.
