After fighting between Turkish and Syrian soldiers in north-west Syria, the UN Security Council is meeting urgently on Thursday afternoon, diplomats said on Wednesday.

The meeting was requested by the United States, France and the United Kingdom. The UN envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen is expected to make a presentation on the situation in the Idleb region during the meeting, which will be public, the sources said.

UN calls for cessation of hostilities

In new clashes, exchanges of fire left more than 20 dead Monday between Turkey and the Syrian regime, at the risk of further destabilizing the province of Idleb, the last great bastion dominated by jihadists and rebels where the humanitarian situation is critical .

On Tuesday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for a "cessation of hostilities" between Turks and Syrians, citing "an extremely worrying change in the nature of the conflict". Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday issued an ultimatum to Bashar al-Assad's regime to roll back its troops, supported by Russian air forces, in northwestern Syria.
