The lifeless body of an ecologist was found this Saturday in a reserve of monarch butterflies in Mexico. It was the second assassination of a butterfly activist in the country in a week.

Raul Hernandez Romero was discovered dead in Las Balistas, in the state of Michoacan. His body had "bruises on different parts of the body and a head injury caused by a sharp object," said the prosecution in a statement on Monday. The victim, a tourist guide in this butterfly reserve listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, had been missing since January 27.

Conflict over illegal logging

His body was found not far from the place where Homero Gomez Gonzalez, an environmental activist known in the region, had been murdered. The body of this 50-year-old man, administrator of the butterfly reserve, was discovered on Wednesday. He had been missing since January 14. According to environmental activists, Gonzalez's death may have been linked to a dispute over the illegal cutting of trees by loggers.

The monarch butterfly ( Danaus plexippus ) travels each year up to 4,500 km from Canada and the United States to establish itself in colonies in the temperate coniferous forests of west-central Mexico. The population of this species has declined significantly due to insecticides, deforestation and climate change.
