After a law change in 2016 that made it easier to apply for debt relief, the number of applicants has increased significantly. 2018 was no exception. 20,513 applications, an increase of about 15 percent compared to 2018, means a new record level.

The share granted has decreased

At the same time, however, the proportion of grant applications has decreased, from around 58 to 52 percent. The chancellor sees a clear reason.

- Some of the applicants are not prepared well enough. You need to keep track of your income, expenses and debts, and be able to show that you have made efforts to improve your situation, such as trying to increase income and reduce costs or coming to terms with a gambling addiction, says Per-Olof Lindh, Head of Unit at Kronofogden, in a press release.

"Some have lost the spark of life"

The Crown Magistrate therefore invites those who now intend to seek contact with a budget and debt adviser at the municipality.

- Most people seeking debt relief live with very small margins. Some have lost the spark of life, others are ashamed of their situation. For these people, debt restructuring can be a crucial turning point, says Per-Olof Lindh.
