According to information published on the website of the Supreme Electoral Court, Mr. Morales is at the top of the list of the Movement towards socialism (MAS) which presents eight candidates for the Senate (four incumbents and four substitutes) for the region of Cochabamba, in the south from the country.

Evo Morales could not be a candidate in the presidential poll scheduled for the same day. On November 24, self-proclaimed interim president Jeanine Añez promulgated a law calling for new presidential and legislative elections which prohibits anyone who has served two consecutive elected terms from standing for a third. It is a close friend of Evo Morales, Luis "Lucho" Arce who will wear the colors of the MAS in the presidential election.

This measure effectively closed the door to a new candidacy for Evo Morales, 60, who has already served three terms. He is also being prosecuted in his country for “sedition” and “terrorism”. Recall that Evo Morales had proclaimed winner of the poll on October 20, a poll contested because of suspicions of fraud. After several weeks of unrest, dropped by the armed forces, Evo Morales finally resigned on November 10 and the elections were canceled.
