Australians evacuated from Wuhan in China due to the corona virus will be isolated on Christmas Island for two weeks before being allowed to return home.

An aircraft with 243 people aboard, including 89 children, landed in Australia on Monday afternoon. From there, the passengers were taken to Christmas Island with military planes, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. The flight crew has had minimal contact with the passengers, among other things, the food was placed on the chairs before the passengers boarded.

According to the BBC, there are about 600 Australians in Wuhan. More may be evacuated later this week, but some of them have been so hesitant to be isolated on Christmas Island that they have chosen to stay in Wuhan, the channel writes.

On Christmas Island, each family will be kept separate, to prevent the virus from spreading if someone turns out to be infected. It turns out that someone in a family is infected, the isolation of the individual family is extended, but it does not affect the rest of the evacuees.

Doctors are sent to the island

Christmas Island has been noted for its infamous refugee locations to which Australia has sent asylum seekers since 2013 pending a message from the authorities. At present, however, there are only four migrants from Sri Lanka on the island, reports the BBC.

Australia's evacuation plan has been criticized in the country, among other things for what critics believe is lack of opportunities to get care on the island. But the government says hundreds of evacuees cannot be accommodated in hospitals in Australia. Instead, 24 doctors and nurses have been sent to Christmas Island where they will examine the possible patients in a temporary hospital.

Australia introduced a ban on travelers from China, who are not Australian citizens or have a permanent residence permit in the country, from entering the country - unless they have spent two weeks elsewhere and are healthy.

Australia has had a total of twelve confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Three of the patients are now completely healthy.
