The Georges-Pompidou road is now closed to traffic - R.LESCURIEUX

  • The municipal elections are held on March 15 and 22, 2020. Each Monday, 20 Minutes will address a theme of the campaign. Today, the challenges around the environment.
  • Almost all candidates for mayor of Paris position themselves in favor of ecology.
  • On paper, it's beautiful, it's green, it shines, but concretely who propose what?

2020, a green year? Faced with the climate emergency, almost all of the candidates for mayor of Paris are positioning themselves in favor of ecology. Place of nature in the city, green spaces, fight against pollution, respect for life, climate emergency, sustainable development, environmental challenge, energy transition ... These words are in the mouth of many candidates during meetings or media outings. But concretely, how to act in a city like Paris, short and long term? While a “great coalition for the climate” is still trying to establish itself among several candidates, 20 Minutes is sifting through the issues and proposals a few weeks before the first round, next March 15.

Green trend in speech

“We have 10 years left to act. The ecological question will be the foundation of my project. We must combine the climate emergency with the imperative of equality and inclusion, ”said outgoing mayor Anne Hidalgo on January 11. Declaring Paris a “state of environmental emergency”, Benjamin Griveaux (LREM) said he was betting on an “action ecology” faced with Anne Hidalgo's “communication ecology”. For his part, Cédric Villani had indicated during his declaration of candidacy: "I want to be the first genuinely ecological mayor of Paris. "I want a non-dogmatic ecology, centered on the well-being and health of Parisians," explains Rachida Dati (LR). "We will not allow Paris to become an ecological city and hospitality if it is not the citizens who take control of their destiny", judge for his part Danielle Simonnet, LFI affiliate candidate. And in all of this, how can you be green when you're at the Greens?

“Everyone in this campaign will do ecology, it feels like on the show“ Ecology has an incredible talent ”. […] Anyway, we stir air. And all tell us that they will become the first truly ecological mayor of Paris, ”joked David Belliard (EELV) at the start of the campaign. Only Marcel Campion and Serge Federbuch (supported by the RN) depart from the ideas of ecology. "Ecology is shit, I have a project for nature", says the first when the second explains: "I do not brandish ecology. I am the only candidate not to do demagogic ecology or punitive ecology ”. What do others offer?

Green spaces and trees

To cope with heat waves and bring nature to the city, the candidates focus on trees and green spaces in a city (irremediably?) Concrete. David Belliard proposes to free 60 hectares, in particular by transforming parking spaces to develop green spaces and promises the creation of "a green space within three minutes on foot from everyone's home" and wishes to plant 100,000 trees. Benjamin Griveaux wants to move the Gare de l'Est to create, instead, a Parisian-style Central Park, a new 30 hectare park. “If she had these 30 hectares, Anne Hidalgo would no doubt concrete. I will not build: I will plant a forest there, ”assures Benjamin Griveaux to the JDD , denouncing Anne Hidalgo's“ B&B and bitumen and concrete policy ”.

Anne Hidalgo who had already launched the idea of urban forests also promises the greening and redevelopment of two large places: Concorde and Etoile. And to plant 170,000 trees in six years "wherever possible". Rachida Dati, she wants to restore the “two lungs of Paris” “the Bois de Vincennes and the Bois de Boulogne, which have become hiding places”.

The fight against pollution

Reducing pollution, and in particular fine particle pollution, is one of the challenges of the campaign. Fighting against pollution is synonymous with fighting against the car for Anne Hidalgo who wants to continue to reduce car traffic in the capital by creating in parallel a "100% bicycle city" or by making the center of Paris pedestrian. Cédric Villani also believes that we must continue to reduce the place of the car "in Paris as elsewhere, but by multiplying the alternatives. Tomorrow we will be traveling in autonomous, shared, on-demand and clean minibuses. ” Benjamin Griveaux plans to attack diesel tourist buses "within 3 years" David Belliard plans "a plan to free Paris from cars and concrete".

Our 2020 Municipal File

On Franceinfo, Rachida Dati said she wanted to "fight against diesel" but not "against the car". "We cannot say" we no longer need any car ", because there are artisans, people who work, families who need it" explained to 20 Minutes the one who wants to "review public transport with the region, The city ".
