An industrial port overlooking the lagoon of Venice (Italy) was evacuated this Sunday morning to neutralize a bomb dating from the Second World War. The operation required the evacuation of 3,500 residents from Marghera, this port located opposite the city of art.

The circulation of boats, trains and buses was suspended during the operation. Planes were prohibited from taking off or landing at Venice Marco Polo International Airport for four hours.

Exploded at sea

The 225 kg bomb, discovered in January during sewer maintenance work, contained 129 kg of TNT. It therefore presented a "high risk of explosion" which justified the evacuation and all the precautions, said the army officer at the head of the operation.

The bomb was first defused in the middle of the morning and then transferred to a boat. When the bomb arrived at sea, at a good distance from the lakeside city, "charges of explosives were placed on the device, which exploded under water", according to a press release from the services of the city of Venice.
