The competition is based on the players individually playing the old Super Mario 64 from 1996, and trying to make it as short as possible. This type of competition, known as Speedrunning, exists for many games, and is usually considered to have started with Quake in the early 90's.

- This is the first world record race in Speedrunning of its kind. We want to make Speedrunning more accessible to the public by having commentators and analysts as in other sports, says Fredrik Lidholt, organizer of the European Speedrunner Assembly.
