From March 1, all Umeå residents will sort out their food waste. The new waste regulations were clubbed in the council this week.

- The sorting of waste is too low in Umeå municipality. To meet the increased demands set by the legislation and to achieve the environmental goals, the council needs to take measures to increase the sorting, says Hans Lindberg (S), chairman of the municipal council.

Next year, it will be law that all municipalities in the country will offer sorting of food waste. In Västerbotten County, so far only Umeå and Skellefteå have offered this for a number of years.

The wreath municipalities are catching on

In March, Nordmaling, Bjurholm, Vännäs, Vindeln and Robertsfors also run the brown barrels.

- Even there everyone will sort out their food waste and it will then go the same way as Umeå's waste, says Helena Johansson, head of household waste at the waste company Vakin.

At the same time, at least in Umeå, a fee is introduced which means that it will cost more the more you throw.
