Sources said to the island that gunmen exploded on Sunday evening the gas line linking Egypt and Israel in the area of Bir al-Abd (North Sinai).

The bombing of the gas line comes two weeks after Israel began exporting 85 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Egypt over a period of 15 years, according to agreements concluded between the two parties over the past two years.

The Associated Press quoted Egyptian security officials as saying that six masked gunmen - at least - planted explosive materials under the pipe, which supplies a natural gas plant in Al-Arish and areas in North Sinai with natural gas.

The sources added that the authorities stopped pumping gas through the pipeline in order to control the fire that broke out.

For its part, German news agency quoted - from a security source and eyewitnesses - that unknown gunmen carried out the explosion and then fled to the desert before the police or the army arrived at the place.

The sources added that the explosion was massive, and that flames and smoke rose from the targeted site.

The Egyptian security source confirmed that there were no casualties in the bombing, and he accused what he described as takfiris of blowing up the line, pointing to the start of a security sweep in search of the attackers.

A local page posted a video clip showing the fire, which is believed to have occurred near the main road.

Since 2011, the two gas pipelines connecting Egypt, Israel and Jordan have been subjected to repeated attacks.
