A human chain in front of the Robert Debré hospital in Paris to denounce the lack of resources, Sunday February 2. - MARTIN BUREAU / AFP

A hundred people gathered Sunday to form a human chain around the Robert Debré hospital in Paris. Meeting at the call of the Inter-Hospital Collective, the demonstrators, many of whom were in white coats, unrolled a banner indicating "Emergency (s) for the public hospital" and carried signs "Angry white coats", "Save the public hospital ”or“ Doctors on strike ”.

"This gathering is heart-warming," said Nicolas Casodias, an emergency medical assistant at a Parisian hospital. “In the emergency room, we have been struggling since March and we realize that when we meet the public, the users, they are massively attached to the public hospital. The government must take this into account. "

Threats of massive resignations

Since mid-January, more than 1,100 hospital doctors, heads of departments and other heads of poles or functional units from all over France and gathered within this collective, say they are ready to resign administratively, that is to say say to suspend their supervisory activities, in the absence of "negotiations" with the government on an increase in the budget and salaries at the hospital.

"A human chain, unfortunately the government does not care," regretted Julie, pediatric resuscitation nurse at Robert Debré, saying "at the end, not far from burnout". "For us, it is symbolic, and we will continue to carry out actions, to make demonstrations". According to her, "the doctors in charge of the service continue to resign en masse" and "the caregivers [will] also end up leaving the ship".

Monday, several actions of resigning doctors are expected, especially in Paris and Caen, according to the collective. After ten months of crisis in the hospital, unions and health care collectives are calling for a new day of strikes and demonstrations on February 14 to demand that the government "open real negotiations" on the sector's budget and wages.
