The Senate is set to end the trial of US President Donald Trump as part of his impeachment this week as the final vote will take place on Wednesday.

The Republican-dominated Senate has great confidence in exonerating the president. Here are the next steps:

* No Senate sessions will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

The third Monday in February:
The trial will resume in the Senate at 11 am local time (1600 GMT) headed by Judge John Roberts, president of the country's Supreme Court.

The session will see four hours of closing arguments from accountability directors from the House of Representatives on the one hand and White House attorneys on the other.

The trial session will then be adjourned and the Senate will then hold a regular session to hear the words of Senators about their opinion of Trump's conviction or acquittal without the presence of Judge Roberts.

Tuesday, the fourth of February:
The words of the Senate continue. Trump is due to deliver his annual State of the Union address to Congress at 9 pm local time (0200 GMT).

Wednesday, February 5:
The trial will resume and the final vote, which will decide to acquit or convict, will be held by 4:00 p.m. local time (2100 GMT).
