Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced on Saturday the breakdown of "all relations", including security, between the Palestinian Authority on the one hand, and Israel and the United States on the other, at an extraordinary meeting of the Arab League on the American peace project.
"We inform you that there will be no kind of relationship with you [the Israelis] as well as with the United States, including on security matters, in light of" the American plan, which is a "violation of Oslo Accords "signed with Israel in 1993, said the president of the Palestinian Authority in Cairo.
Anger of the Palestinians
He claimed to have conveyed the message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and called on the Hebrew state to "assume its responsibilities as an occupying power" in the Palestinian Territories. The Palestinians "have the right to continue their legitimate struggle by peaceful means to end the occupation," he added.
The American plan, unveiled on Tuesday by Donald Trump and which notably provides for the annexation of parts of the West Bank occupied by Israel, has aroused the approval of many Israelis but the anger of the Palestinians. Among the project's many sensitive points is the annexation by Israel of the settlements it has established in the West Bank occupied since 1967, in particular in the Jordan Valley, which is to become the eastern border of Israel.
The settlements established in the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel since 1967 are considered illegal by the United Nations, and a large part of the international community sees them as a major obstacle to peace. If Israeli colonization of the occupied West Bank has continued under all Israeli governments since 1967, it has accelerated in recent years under the leadership of Benyamin Netanyahu and his ally in Washington, President Donald Trump.
