THE ESSENTIAL

  • Almost four years after the Brexit vote and one year behind schedule, the UK is leaving the European Union this Friday evening, midnight Paris time.
  • Concretely, this evening, little changes: it is a new year of difficult negotiations which begins between London and Brussels to know what will be their future relation.
  • However, the Brexiters who have been waiting for this date for a long time have nevertheless planned to mark the occasion on this day which promises to be historic. In the right direction for some, the bad for others.

Customs unions denounce workforce management in view of Brexit

7:31 a.m .: Press review

"It's time", puts Liberation on its front page, with a paper plane in the colors of the Union Jack. "The day of the re-embarkation" is written on the next page. Guillaume Goubert in La Croix expresses a kind of amorous spite: "And nobody seems to think" Good riddance ". Many, however, have been able to say to themselves one day or another: "But if they don't like Europe, let them go and let us make our Europe peacefully!" "At the time of departure, it is rather a feeling of sadness and emptiness that predominates."

On the economic level “Brussels wants at all costs to prevent the appearance of a deregulated tax haven on its doorstep. So does his own model, which could suffer from competition with a Singapore-on-Thames ”, writes Philippe Gélie in Le Figaro . For its part, L'Humanité in title "Boris Johnson in the footsteps of Margaret Thatcher" in One. Its editorial writer Gaël De Santis insists on the failure for the left represented by the event, under the title "Nationalism, vice for the left".

The fact remains that "the hardest part begins," recalls Laurent Marchant for Ouest-France , because "forty-seven years of common architecture and 600 international agreements must be revised, confirmed or rewritten". Yes: "Brexit: change is not now," recalls Nord Littoral .

7:23 a.m .: Press review

"Yes, we did it!" "Proclaimed the Daily Express , a tabloid which campaigned ardently for the separation. The title surmounted a map of Great Britain formed by front pages of the newspaper during the 43 months that have passed since the referendum of June 2016. "A new dawn for Great Britain", headlined another pro-Brexit tabloid, the Daily Mail . "At 11 o'clock this evening our proud nation finally leaves the EU - still friendly with Europe, but free and again independent after forty-seven years".

The left-wing daily The Guardian expressed its pro-EU preference, titling "Little Island" and describing Brexit as "the biggest gamble in a generation". For the Financial Times , "Britain is retiring and leaving the EU with a mixture of optimism and regret". "It was a hell of a trip," headlined City AM , a free business newspaper, above a drawing of a small roller coaster train with the faces of the main players in the Brexit saga.

In Scotland, where the majority of voters were in favor of staying in the EU, the tone was very different. The Edinburgh daily Scotsman headline bitterly "Adieu, pas au revoir", and used the word "Adieu" in 24 European languages. The Daily Record was no more optimistic, summing up the post-Brexit situation: "Cheated: isolated, less prosperous, weaker and divided".

7:16 a.m. Crying and laughing, almost at the same time

The front page of the very serious The Times in London this morning expresses all the ambiguity of this day when, let us remember, despite the clear victory of Boris Johnson in December in the legislative elections, polls on the question of Brexit are still very very tight across the Channel.

7 h 09: For a good awakening

Perhaps the best UK has given to the rest of the world and to Europe may have been its music. So I suggest you start this dense day with this little gem from Rebecca Manzoni and France Inter: the episode of Tube'n co, the London Calling Clash lab . "One of the last rock revolts" in 1979: interpret it differently if you are pro-EU or pro-Brexit.

7:03 a.m .: Less than 5 p.m. This is the time left in the UK to live in the European Union. At midnight Paris time, it will be over. We are together to make you live this necessarily historic day. Hello everyone, Rachel here, make yourself comfortable!
