The attempts of the Democratic opposition in the political trial of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, have received a blow this Friday, when a Republican senator said he will not support the measure, before the crucial vote on this initiative.

Alaska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski , a moderate, said she would vote "no" when the Senate considers the motion to call more witnesses later this Friday.

Democrats, who are a minority in the Senate, needed four Republican votes to allow witnesses to give their testimonies, and Murkowski had been considered one of the few Republican senators who could support the motion.

"Given the partisan nature of the impeachment procedure since its inception, I have come to the conclusion that there will not be a fair trial in the Senate. I do not believe that continuing it will change anything. It is sad to admit it, but Congress as an institution has failed," he said. Murkowski in a statement.
