At least 467 people were killed and more than 9 thousand were injured since the start of protests in Iraq on October 1, 2019. This was stated by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Iraq, the head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, Janine Hennis-Plasshart.

“The ongoing deaths of young people and the daily bloodshed are unacceptable. At least 467 protesters have been killed and more than 9,000 injured since October 1, ”her statement said on the website of the UN Mission in Iraq.

Hennis-Plasshart called on Iraqi authorities to protect the rights of peaceful demonstrators and to ensure that the use of force is in line with international standards.

Mass protests have been taking place in Iraq since October 1 due to the worsening social situation, increasing corruption and unemployment.
